Boston Brown Bread

  buttermilk

  dark brown sugar


Heat oven to 325°F.

In a large bowl mix the flours, baking soda, baking powder, salt, allspice, brown sugar, and raisins together.

Add buttermilk and molasses together.

Add wet ingredients to dry and mix well.

Butter a coffee can or loaf pan. Fill the cans or pan no higher than 2/3's full. Cover tightly with foil and tie the foil on.

Place can or pan in large roasting pan and fill the large container with boiling water until it reaches 1/3 the way up can or pan.

Bake for 2 hours and 15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in middle comes clean.

Let cool for at least an hour before turning the bread out of its container.

Notes: You can use 1 cup water and 4 tablespoons buttermilk powder.
